About

Caroline conducted her PhD work (2000-2004) at the Children's Health and Exercise Research Centre, Exeter University, investigating food intake responses to exercise-induced energy expenditure in lean and overweight children. Caroline was subsequently appointed as lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science at Northumbria University in 2004, with programme leadership responsibilities at MSc level - Nutrition and Psychological Sciences (a unique course designed to inform and develop research into the interaction of diets and foods with our brain and behaviour) and BSc level - Sport, Exercise and Nutrition. Consultancy work has included work for local secondary schools, the BBC, local radio and press. An active athlete, Caroline has represented her country in Dragonboat Racing and continues to compete in the UK National League.

Research

Caroline's PhD work formed the basis for further ‘free-living' trials investigating exercise-induced appetite and food intake. Currently young athletes are being studied using sport-specific exercise protocols to examine energy regulation and ‘compensation' for exercise-induced energy expenditure. Other research projects and areas of interest include methodological considerations with body composition assessment in young people, hydration in young people and appropriate dietary strategies for children, both for health and sport.
