She graduated from the University of Brighton in 1996 and completed her PhD at the University of Birmingham in 1999 where her research focussed on the effect of exercise on immune system function.
Paula spent four years as a post-doctoral research fellow in South Africa. Three of these years were at the University of Stellenbosch where she formulated and tested a range of nutritional supplements to maintain immune function in endurance sports people. This work received an award of excellence by the South African department of Trade and Industry. During her final year in South Africa, Paula was based in the Sport Science Institute of South Africa at the University of Cape Town where she investigated the role of inflammation in the sensation of fatigue. Her main research interest is the role of cytokines in fatigue during exercise, chronic fatigue syndrome and inflammatory disorders as well the effect of non-pharmacological therapies on inflammation and immune function. Paula also runs a clinic for rehabilitating underperforming, chronically fatigued athletes and individuals with chronic fatigue syndrome. Paula is accredited for both scientific support and research by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences.
